All that remains in Old Forbestown today are a few homes, the Memorial Cemetery, and the Masonic Lodge which is still in use. The cemetery has approximately three hundred grave sites, many unmarked and unknown. The grounds are maintained by volunteers from the Masonic Lodge and Yuba Feather Historical Association.

Typical Prices of Goods -- 1849

Goods were bought in large quantities, and consumed, wasted, or destroyed rapidly. Gold was plentiful, prices were high, and the trader lived in clover. The following are wholesale prices of articles in 1849, to which the trader added a liberal per cent, when he sold them to the consumer.

1 case Mexican hats --- $268.00
10 tins crackers --- $85.00
1 box chocolate --- $40.00
24 flannel shirts --- $192.00
6 pairs of pants --- $108.00
4 uniform jackets --- $128.00
3 yards blue cloth --- $36.00
5 lbs. thread --- $5.00
1 blanket (serape) --- $80.00
4 pairs boots --- $96.00
3 blankets (bed) --- $75.00
1 tea set --- $24.00

In 1850, a family coming West needed $1,000.00 to start a 160-acre farm.

Meat Prices April 1940.

A Marysville butcher's ad shows.

Prime rib at 25 cents a pound.
Ham at 15 cents a pound.
Lamb roast at 21 cents a pound.
Corned tongue at 8 cents a pound.
Belgian hares at 29 cents a pound.
Mock chicken legs at 5 cents each.

In 1893.

Raisins --- 5 Pounds --- 25 Cents.
Olives --- $1 --- Per Gallon.

Did you Know?

Back in the 1860's and 70's, the miners hung China Men for entertainment. A report states that it took 3 days for one of them to die, which gave more entertainment to the community.
