There have been some really exciting things happening at the Mountain Library in Forbestown! Most of our extensive collection of books has been entered into a computer database this past year by Susan Showalter. Keeping track of books will be a lot easier now and much more efficient.

Janice Morrison continues to have a kid’s craft class every Thursday. The children get off the school bus at the community center and look forward to whatever fun project Janice has in store for them.

Our current setup now includes four computers, three on the internet, a printer to be used with all of them, FAX capability and a scanner to make document copying available.

The Forbestown Advisory Council has been fortunate to get some help from volunteers Stan Meadows and Marilyn Callander. All of the new equipment that we have now has come from Stan, and he’s agreed to maintain it. We’re most thankful for his generosity. He and Marilyn have been giving their time to the community since Forbestown Daze 2002, when they volunteered to make his famous chili to sell and donate the proceeds to the community center. Since then, Stan has been our computer guru. He does computer repair out of his home, as many of our grateful residents can attest to.

Marilyn is an extremely talented lady who does wonderful graphic projects, including a beautiful 2003 Forbestown calendar and personalized calendars for businesses and individuals.

Stan’s parents had property in Forbestown for many years, and when he and Marilyn decided to retire in December of this year, they thought this would be a nice place to settle in. We want to welcome them to the community!

Stan recently built permanent computer stations so that the equipment can be locked up during rentals of the hall. This is a big improvement over packing it all up and stuffing it in the closet.

If you have any computer related questions or projects, or would just like some help in using your computer, the couple will be at the community center every Tuesday and Wednesday to assist you. The public is welcome to come and make use of the equipment and services. The Library is open Monday through Wednesday 12:00 to 4:00 PM and Thursday 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

On Saturday evening, July 15th, my husband and I attended a fund raiser for the Yuba Feather Museum in Forbestown. The museum's re-creation of a 1890's Gold Town (Gold Trader Flat), was alive and buzzing. There was so much to see and do, among some of the friendliest folks we've ever met! Judging by the abundant smiles everyone was enjoying the event as much as we were.

The aroma of Tri-Tip Roasts (cooking over an open pit) and other goodies (potatoes, peach and cherry cobblers, and rice pudding) in Dutch ovens permeated the air. Decorated tables were set-up throughout the replicated town. We enjoyed a delicious all you could eat dinner and learned that Leonard Sanders III and his crew were the Pioneer cooks for the event.

Marge Holmes one of the Docents invited us to join her in a tour of the Village. She told us the history of the wonderful exhibits, the Museum and the Village. At dusk flickering lights in all the buildings helped set the scene giving us a feeling of being back in time. We visited a working Mercantile Store with some very unusual goods for sale. The clerk was helpful and well informed. He looked like he had just stepped out of the Gold Rush era. We were impressed as we toured the town and saw the wonderful exhibits and artifacts.

We were told that all this had been accomplished by private donations and volunteer workers. Impressive. These fine folks are passionate about their museum and it inspired us to become members of such a worthwhile endeavor.

On Monday afternoon, July 17th, while listening to KPAY 1290 AM, I heard Bruce Sessions comment on the BBQ and Museum tucked away in the foothills. He sounded as impressed as we were. He also said he will be the M.C. at the next event called Forbestown Daze on August 5th from 8 am to 5 pm.

I hope everyone will make it a point to experience the intoxicating charm of the Yuba Feather Museum and Gold Trader Flat sometime soon. For more information you can call 530-675-1025, or visit their web site at http://yfhmuseum.org/forbes/
The town of Forbestown has their own web page, http://forbestown.com/
These folks have done an incredible job.

Dear Residents of Forbestown,

As many of you know, this fall a couple was interested in purchasing the general store. Before escrow had even closed the beer/wine license was transferred to the potential buyers. This created a lot of stress as the purchase of the property was not completed. Beer and wine are not our best sellers as many would think, but it is bought in combination with other products. This has led to decreased sales and eventually the loss of most of our customers.

We have done everything in our power to facilitate the return of this license. Unfortunately we are unable to purchase another as they run in the thousands of dollars. The people who have the license appear to have no interest in returning it either.

It is with great sadness that feel we have no other alternative but to close the doors. We realize that it will be a hardship on many of you, and greatly appreciate the support that you have given to the store.

Katherine and Steve,
Forbestown General Store

The ordinance that will require property owners of more than one acre to obtain an environmental review to clear brush from their own property, DID NOT PASS!

Butte County Property Owners!

The Butte Environmental Council along with the Butte County Planning Department is developing an ordinance that will require property owners of more than one acre to obtain an environmental review to clear brush from their own property.
We need your help to defeat this proposed ordinance. Your presence at the next Board of Supervisor meeting on February 22 is critical in preventing this ordinance from going into effect. This ordinance will effect Oroville primarily and the surrounding lake proprieties. The ordinance, doesn't have much effect on Chico.
If you have any questions regarding this ordinance attend the February 22 Supervisors meeting. If transportation is a problem please do not hesitate to give our office a call at 530 589-5670. The citizens of Oroville ask me Dan Kohrdt, not to give up, we need your support the 22nd.. If you are there I will continue the fight, if not, I will give up along with you, don't allow Chico to win! Meeting time is 9:30 A.M., February 22, 2000.

Thank You,
Danny G. Kohrdt
President
Ridgeway Development

P.S. I will be presenting our development plans one piece at a time in public comments on the 22nd.
